All-State Band

Eligiblity
Outstanding musicians, who are students of IBA members, in grades 9 -12 are eligible for the All-State Band.  The student must be a member in good standing of his/her school's band program throughout the school year. All participants are required to attend all rehearsals and the performance for the 59th Annual All-State Festival weekend (March 8, 9, and 10, 2019). Students must verify their availability.  We ask that students not audition if they cannot make a commitment to attend the entire All-State Festival weekend.

Registration Instructions (Registration Opens November 1)

  1. Directors must register their school for the All-State Band audition event.
  2. Fill out the Director / School Registration.   When you complete the form and press submit, the next screen will show you a “school registration code” for you to distribute to your students.
  3. If you teach a more than one school you will need to fill out a registration for each school. Go back to the Director / School Registration and select: Continue an already started All-State Band Application for a new school. Then log back in using the same email address and password.  Then select: Click Here to Start a New Entry for a school not listed above.  You will then receive a different registration code for the second school.
  4. Next give your students information about the event, how to find this page and the school registration code.
  5. Students register individually online by selecting Student Application on the All-State webpage.  When a student completes a form you will automatically receive a computer generated email verifying the registration.
  6. Each application requires a $10 fee which must be paid online via PayPal.  The application window will open Thursday, November 1 and close Saturday, December 1, at 11:59 PM EST.

Requirements

All students auditioning pay a $10.00 entry fee per instrument and are required to play the entire set of musical excerpts for his/her instrument.  The excerpts are available on the IBA website www.indianabandmasters.org  (Students who double playing flute/piccolo, Bb clarinet/Eb clarinet or Oboe/English horn pay one audition fee but perform on both instruments.) The excerpts for all instruments are chosen to discriminate between the very finest players in Indiana.  The purpose of these excerpts is to 1) delineate between All-State caliber and non-All-State caliber players, 2) to delineate between All-State Honor Band personnel and All-State Band personnel, 3) to rank players within the sections of each band.  The excerpts must have demands that will enable the adjudicator to discriminate at each of these levels.  Students auditioning may not always be able to play every excerpt perfectly at the tempo indicated.  Each student must also sight-read an excerpt, provided by IBA, on his/her instrument.  Students auditioning on bass trombone play the first two trombone excerpts and the bass trombone excerpt.  Each percussionist will be required to prepare excerpts on 3 instruments: snare drum, keyboard mallets and timpani. Each player will also be required to sight-read a brief excerpt on one instrument.  The player will select the instrument before being presented the excerpt.  Percussion applicants pay only one audition fee.

Audition Date

Auditions are Sunday, January 13, 2019 starting at 1:00 PM local time.  Information concerning audition schedules and locations will be posted on the IBA website when received from the Audition Center Hosts.  In the event of weather-related problems, auditions may be moved to the following Wednesday at the discretion of the host chairperson.

Cost
Once members are selected there will be a $145.00 registration fee assessed per All-State Band member to cover meals, music, guest conductors, concert venue, etc.  There will also be a housing fee of $50.00 to cover two nights of lodging and on-site transportation.
Total fee = $195.00 per student.

Conductors
Scott Teeple, from the University of Wisconsin, will conduct the All-State Honor Band. Jason Worsbyt, from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, will conduct the All-State Band. Both of these directors will make this an incredible experience for all involved.   Observing these rehearsals can be beneficial to everyone. Directors may earn professional growth points by observing All-State Band rehearsals.  Certificates will be available from the IBA President.

Chaperones

We will again rely on your help and expertise in auditioning students at the local audition sites in January. Please indicate your availability on the summary form.  Additionally we will need assistance for auditions/sectionals on-site at Purdue.  Our Vice President, Rick Granlund from North Central High School in Indianapolis, will be coordinating the auditions/sectionals.  Email Rick if you are available to volunteer for chaperoning and/or serving as an audition/sectional leader.
