Junior All-State Band

The Twelfth Annual Junior All-State Band Festival will be a virtual experience.  While nothing truly can replace the in-person ensemble, we believe the plans that are being made will make this unique experience a worthwhile event for the selected students.  A video performance of the ensemble will be featured as part of the Indiana Music Educators Association (IMEA) Virtual Professional Development Conference.   The video will then be released to the public via YouTube. Questions may be directed to the event coordinators: Rob Shaver or Kati Briel.

Outstanding musicians in grades 7 - 9 are eligible for Junior All-State Band.  All selected participants are required to attend the Zoom sectional coaching on Saturday, December 5 and submit their performance video by Wednesday, December 16.  We ask that students not audition if they cannot make a commitment to fulfil these requirements.
The Junior All-State audition will consist of two excerpts to be recorded and uploaded online with the student application.  Audition music will be posted on Monday, September 14.  The recording may not be electronically edited.  The application/upload link will open October 24 and close at 11:59 PM EST on November 13. The $10 audition fee must be paid individually online via PayPal.   No late entries will be accepted!

All students auditioning pay a $10.00 entry fee per instrument and are required to record two musical excerpts for upload (MP3 or M4A). Students who would like to audition on flute and piccolo pay one audition fee and include a piccolo excerpt.  For percussionists there is one snare drum excerpt and one keyboard excerpt.  The excerpts for all instruments are chosen to discriminate between the very finest players at this age level and to rank the players within each section of the band.  Students auditioning may not always be able to play every excerpt perfectly at the tempo indicated.  Student applications and recordings are submitted online.

Registration Instructions

1. Directors must register their school for the Junior All-State Band auditions.

2. Fill out the Director / School Registration.   When you complete the form and press submit, the next screen will show you a “school access code” for you to distribute to your students.  The student registration window opens October 24 and will close at 11:59 PM Friday, November 13.

3. If you teach a more than one school you will need to fill out a registration for each school. Go back to the Director / School Registration and select: Continue an already started Junior All-State Band Application for a new school. Then log back in using the same email address and password.  Then select: Click Here to Start a New Entry for a school not listed above.  You will then receive a different password for the second school.

4. Next directors give students the information about the event, where to find the IBA website and the school access code.

5. Students register individually online by selecting Student Application / Audition Upload (opens on October 24).  When a student completes the form and upload directors should automatically receive a computer-generated email verifying the registration.  The application and recording upload must be completed at the same time.  The excerpt recordings are individually uploaded.  Students should wait until they have their final recordings of each excerpt before starting the application.

6. Each application requires a $10 fee which must be paid by online via PayPal before you upload your recordings.
Recording the Audition
  1. Record in a quiet place with no distracting noises.
  2. Do some test recordings to determine how close you should be to your microphone.
  3. Record the 1st excerpt.  Select your best recording to upload. 
  4. Record the 2nd excerpt. Select your best recording to upload.
  5. Flute students who also want to audition on piccolo record the piccolo excerpt.  Select your best recording to upload.

A selection committee will review the auditions using a “blind” format.  Student recordings will be assigned a number and the listener will not know the student’s name or school.

Once members are selected, there will be a $37.00 registration fee assessed per Junior All-State Band member to cover expenses.  Selected student registration forms and fees must be submitted with the student’s performance video by Wednesday, December 16.
