All-State Band

Eligiblity
Outstanding musicians, who are students of IBA members, in grades 9 -12 are eligible for the All-State Band.  The student must be a member in good standing of his/her school's band program throughout the school year. All participants are required to attend all rehearsals and the performance for the 6
1st Annual All-State Festival weekend (March 12, 13 & 14, 2021). Students must verify their availability.  We ask that students not audition if they cannot make a commitment to attend the entire All-State Festival weekend. The application deadline is 11:59 PM EST, Friday, December 4. A $10 late fee will apply to applications received after the deadline but before Saturday, December 12. Applications received after that day will have a $50 late fee. No applications will be accepted after January 2, 2021.

Requirements

All students auditioning pay a $10.00 entry fee per instrument and are required to play a chromatic scale and 2 etudes for his/her instrument.  The chromatic scales are used to demonstrate the student’s mastery of the full range of the instrument,  In order to fully comply copyright rules, etude books will now be used for auditions.  A complete list of the books to be used every year is below.  The etudes for all instruments are chosen to discriminate between the very finest players in Indiana.  The specific excerpts will be available Monday, October 14th. The purpose of these etudes is to 1) delineate between All-State caliber and non-All-State caliber players, 2) to delineate between All-State Honor Band personnel and All-State Band personnel, 3) to rank players within the sections of each band. (Students who double playing flute/piccolo, Bb clarinet/Eb clarinet, Oboe/English horn or trombone/bass trombone pay one audition fee but perform on both instruments.)  Students auditioning may not always be able to play every excerpt perfectly at the tempo indicated.  Each student must also sight-read an excerpt on his/her instrument.  Each percussionist will be required to prepare etudes  on three  instruments: snare drum, keyboard mallets and timpani and sight-read a brief excerpt on one instrument.  The player will select the instrument before being presented the excerpt.  Percussion applicants pay only one audition fee.

Chaperones / Audition Help

We will again rely on your help at the local audition sites in January. Please indicate your availability on the summary form.  We will also need assistance for auditions/sectionals on-site at Purdue.  Our Vice President, Candi Granlund from Zionsville West Middle School, will be coordinating the auditions/sectionals.  Email Candi if you are available to volunteer for chaperoning and/or serving as an audition/sectional leader.  Chaperones receive all meals and a king room.

Conductors

Dr. Kevin Sedatole, from Michigan State University, will conduct the All-State Honor Band. Dr. Rebecca Phillips, from Colorado State University, will conduct the All-State Band. Both of these conductors will provide an incredible experience for all involved.   Observing these rehearsals can be beneficial to everyone. IBA directors may earn professional growth points by observing the All-State Band rehearsals.  Certificates will be available from the IBA President.
